Santeria
From a biblical Christian perspective, Santería is dangerous because it mixes Christianity with pagan practices and spirit worship, creating a false religion that deceives people into thinking they are following God while actually engaging in idolatry and the occult. Santería involves the veneration of orishas (spirits or deities), animal sacrifices, divination, and rituals that Scripture explicitly condemns (Deuteronomy 18:10–12; 1 Corinthians 10:20). By attempting to combine elements of Catholic saints with African spirit worship, Santería distorts the truth of the gospel and leads people to honor spirits rather than the one true God revealed in Jesus Christ.
It is also spiritually dangerous because it places faith in rituals, sacrifices, and communication with spirits rather than in the finished work of Christ on the cross. The Bible teaches that there is “one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5), not orishas, saints, or priests of Santería. By encouraging people to seek guidance, protection, or power from spiritual beings other than God, Santería opens the door to demonic deception and bondage. From a Christian standpoint, this false religion keeps people enslaved to fear and superstition instead of offering the true freedom, forgiveness, and eternal life found only in Jesus Christ.

1. Claim: “Santería connects us to the spiritual world through orishas (deities) for guidance and protection.”
Christian Response: Scripture forbids invoking spirits, angels, or other gods for guidance (Deuteronomy 18:10–12). True guidance comes from God alone through His Spirit (John 16:13). Relying on orishas is spiritually dangerous because it puts trust in created beings rather than the Creator (Romans 1:25).
2. Claim: “Ancestor veneration honors our heritage and strengthens family ties.”
Christian Response: While remembering ancestors can be good, praying to or attempting to communicate with the dead is explicitly forbidden (Leviticus 19:31; 1 Samuel 28:7–8). Only God can hear prayers and grant blessing or protection (Psalm 115:16). Seeking guidance from the dead opens people to deception and spiritual harm.
3. Claim: “Offerings and sacrifices to the orishas bring prosperity, health, and success.”
Christian Response: Scripture teaches that God alone provides for our needs and that offering sacrifices to other gods is idolatry (Exodus 20:3–5; Psalm 50:10–12). Attempting to manipulate spiritual powers for personal gain is rebellion against God’s sovereignty and opens one to demonic influence (James 4:7).
4. Claim: “Santería promotes harmony with nature and universal spiritual energy.”
Christian Response: While creation is good (Genesis 1:31), Scripture warns against worshiping creation or attributing spiritual power to it (Romans 1:25). Harmony comes through obedience to God, not through rituals or magical practices. Treating the created world as a source of divine power is idolatry.
5. Claim: “Divination and readings help us make wise decisions.”
Christian Response: The Bible condemns divination, fortune-telling, and reading omens (Deuteronomy 18:10–12; Isaiah 8:19). True wisdom comes from God’s Word and the Holy Spirit (James 1:5). Seeking supernatural insight apart from God is spiritually dangerous and deceptive.
6. Claim: “Possession and trance allow communication with spiritual beings for enlightenment.”
Christian Response: Scripture warns against engaging in spirit possession or allowing spirits to control our actions (1 Corinthians 10:20–21; Galatians 5:19–21). True spiritual growth comes through Christ’s Spirit, not through mystical experiences that can open people to demonic influence (Ephesians 6:12).
7. Claim: “Santería rituals are a legitimate expression of culture and heritage.”
Christian Response: Cultural expression does not justify practices that violate God’s commands (Colossians 2:20–23). Any system that involves idolatry, spirit invocation, or ritualized sorcery is spiritually dangerous, regardless of tradition (Exodus 22:18).
8. Claim: “Initiation and secret knowledge empower us spiritually.”
Christian Response: Scripture teaches that salvation and spiritual authority are not gained through secret knowledge, initiation, or ritual (1 Corinthians 2:6–7). Only faith in Christ grants true spiritual life and power (John 1:12). Secret spiritual systems often deceive and lead people away from God.
9. Claim: “Orishas intercede on our behalf and answer prayers like saints or angels.”
Christian Response: Only Jesus is the Mediator between God and humanity (1 Timothy 2:5). Relying on spirits to intercede is a form of idolatry and misleads people into trusting created beings rather than the Creator. Scripture commands direct prayer to God alone (Matthew 6:6).
10. Claim: “Santería helps people connect with ancestors and spirits in a positive, protective way.”
Christian Response: Attempting to contact the dead, even with good intentions, violates God’s commands and can open individuals to deception and demonic influence (Leviticus 19:31; 1 Chronicles 10:13–14). Protection and blessing come only from God, not spirits of the dead.
