Mormonism (LDS)

From a biblical Christian perspective, Mormonism (LDS) is dangerous because it presents a false Christ and a false gospel. The Bible teaches that there is one eternal God (Isaiah 43:10; Deuteronomy 6:4), yet Mormonism teaches that God was once a man who became exalted, that humans can also become gods, and that Jesus is the spirit-brother of Lucifer rather than the eternal Son of God (John 1:1–3; Colossians 1:16). This distortion of God’s nature and Christ’s identity undermines the heart of the gospel, since only the eternal, uncreated Son of God could provide an all-sufficient sacrifice for sin. The apostle Paul warned against “another Jesus” and “another gospel” (2 Corinthians 11:4; Galatians 1:8–9), which directly applies to Mormonism’s teachings.

Mormonism is also spiritually dangerous because it adds to Scripture, elevating the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price alongside—or above—the Bible. This contradicts God’s Word, which is complete and sufficient (2 Timothy 3:16–17; Revelation 22:18–19). Furthermore, LDS theology promotes a works-based system of salvation through temple rituals, obedience to church ordinances, and personal worthiness, rather than salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone (Ephesians 2:8–9). By placing authority in the LDS Church and its prophets rather than in God’s Word, Mormonism leads people into a counterfeit system that cannot save and blinds them to the true gospel of Jesus Christ.

Objections

1. Claim: “The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and restores true Christianity.”

Christian Response: The Bible is God’s complete and sufficient Word (2 Timothy 3:16–17). Additional “scriptures” like the Book of Mormon contradict core biblical truths, such as salvation by grace through faith alone (Ephesians 2:8–9). Adding new revelation undermines the sufficiency of Christ’s finished work on the cross.

2. Claim: “God was once a man, and humans can become gods through exaltation.”

Christian Response: Scripture teaches that God is eternal, uncreated, and wholly distinct from His creation (Psalm 90:2; Isaiah 43:10). Humans do not become gods; instead, they are redeemed by grace and made heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). The LDS teaching of “human divinization” is unbiblical.

3. Claim: “The Trinity is incorrect; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are separate gods.”

Christian Response: The Bible presents one God in three Persons (Matthew 28:19; John 1:1; Colossians 2:9). Denying the Trinity distorts the nature of God and the identity of Jesus, who is fully God and fully man. Polytheism contradicts God’s revealed oneness (Deuteronomy 6:4).

4. Claim: “The priesthood authority of LDS leaders restores Christ’s true church.”

Christian Response: Authority is not conferred through human ordination but through faith in Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8; Ephesians 4:11–12). Claiming exclusive priesthood authority outside of biblical revelation misleads believers.

5. Claim: “Salvation requires faith plus works, ordinances, and temple rituals.”

Christian Response: Salvation is by grace alone through faith in Christ, not by works or ritual compliance (Romans 3:28; Galatians 2:16). Adding ceremonies or ordinances as prerequisites for heaven undermines the sufficiency of Jesus’ atoning sacrifice.

6. Claim: “God the Father has a physical body, and Jesus inherited a literal body from Him.”

Christian Response: Scripture presents God as Spirit (John 4:24), not as a physical being. Christ became human through the virgin birth (Matthew 1:18–23), but the Father is incorporeal. Physicalizing God misrepresents His divine nature.

7. Claim: “Other Christian denominations have strayed; only the LDS Church preserves true doctrine.”

Christian Response: True Christianity is not defined by an institution but by faith in Jesus Christ and obedience to God’s Word (John 3:16–18; 1 Corinthians 12:12–13). Claiming exclusivity denies the global body of believers who trust Christ alone for salvation.

8. Claim: “The Book of Abraham, Pearl of Great Price, and other LDS texts are inspired scripture.”

Christian Response: These texts contain historical and doctrinal errors and contradict the Bible. God’s revelation is complete in Christ and Scripture (Hebrews 1:1–2; Revelation 22:18–19). Introducing additional “revelation” leads people away from the gospel of Jesus Christ.
